Tapo’s palm scan door lock has a guaranteed one-year battery life.

Tapo is the latest brand to attempt to allow you to open your front door with just a wave of your palm. The company today announced the PalmKey smart door lock, which lets you enter your home via a PIN, fingerprint, or palm scan.

The palm scanner requires your hand to be about 4 to 10 inches away from the reader, and according to Tapo, it works even if your hands are wet or dirty or your fingerprints are worn. The system reportedly uses AI to evaluate vein patterns within the palm.

Tapo’s lock has a removable, rechargeable 10,000 mAh battery that lasts for a year on a single charge, making it fairly easy to maintain. Physical key backups are also supported, according to the press release, but Tapo did not detail where those devices are located. It also works with Alexa, SmartThings, and Google Home.

Details beyond that are limited. Tapo did not share pricing or release date.

Palm scanning is one of the new trends seen in smart locks. Philips is already selling a palm-scanning model, and Eufy announced one in December. What this Tapo model is missing is some of the true hands-free technology likely to hit the market this year. These locks utilize your smartphone’s ultra-wideband to automatically open the door when it detects you approaching, so you never have to lift your hand.
