Tenerife residents call plan ‘reckless’ as hantavirus approaches ships

The MV Hondius is anchored near Cape Verde for three days and is sailing towards the Canary Islands in Spain, where all passengers will be evacuated.

Three people have died on board or after traveling on a ship following a hantavirus outbreak.

The cruise departed from Argentina a month ago. Spanish Health Minister Monica García said Wednesday that the cruise ship will dock at Tenerife’s Granadilla port.

Everyone on board will undergo a medical evaluation upon arrival and, if fit to travel, those from overseas will be repatriated, Garcia said.

Residents of Tenerife told the BBC they were concerned about the ship’s arrival and that residents “could face problems on the island”.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea… but people need help,” said one of the residents.
