Billy Horschel made the decisive putt to give Atlanta Drive GC its seventh straight win with a 7-4 victory over The Bay Golf Club on Tuesday.
A 7-footer for 13 birdies in a rematch of last season’s semifinal lifted the defending champions to a 2-0 record and put Atlanta firmly in control as it looks to win back-to-back titles.
Patrick Cantlay, who sat out the defending champions’ first game of the season due to injury, joined Horschel and Chris Gotterup, and they all played well enough to decide the match after just 13 holes and hand Bay his first loss of the season.
“We fought really well,” Horschel said. Horschel pointed out a pair of chips from Patrick Cantlay and substitute Chris Gotterup to keep the game close in triples.
“When you look at how everything played out on the night, those are two valuable holes. It’s a really solid night.”
How Atlanta Maintained Its Winning Streak
The Bay tied the score at 3-3 after Shane Lowry gave Horschel a loss on the 10th hole, and Cantlay holed a 40-foot chip for birdie just when it looked like The Bay would tie the score on the final hole of a triple.
Atlanta Drive fell behind 2-1, but regained the lead after winning on 6th and 8. Gotterup hit the shot of the day in the sixth when he stood on an awkward chip with both feet in a greenside bunker and the ball touched his lips.
“There was a lot of luck involved,” Gotterup admits. “I stood on it for a second and had to call a timeout because I didn’t know what to do. Sometimes you get lucky in this game… take it while you can.”
“We are interested in this TGL,” Horschel said. “We compete and we don’t want to lose. We want to win.”
WTGL is scheduled to be launched in winter 2026-27
Lexi Thompson was in the building the day the league announced the formation of the WTGL, which will feature LPGA stars competing at the SoFi Center starting in late 2026.
“I think it’s going to be really interesting to see that on the LPGA Tour because we’ve already seen the success of TGL and it’s been able to highlight a little different side of the players,” said Patrick Cantlay.
The new league will launch at the end of the 2026 LPGA Tour season and run through the winter of 2026-27.
“I’m thrilled,” LPGA Tour Commissioner Craig Kessler said of the opportunity to showcase some LPGA Tour stars on the TGL stage.
“As (Deputy Chief Liz Moore) and I landed and drove around today, there were a few moments where we were pinching ourselves because we were so excited about what was going to happen,” Kessler said. “This is one of those moments.”
Men’s TGL is scheduled to expand in Detroit in 2027 with the addition of Motor City Golf Club.
Sky Sports Golf Podcast – BUMPER 2025 Review
Horschel joined Jamie Weir and Rob Lee on the Sky Sports Golf podcast to look back at the biggest stories in the world of golf in 2025 and historic moments at the American’s Choice Augusta.
“It’s hard to pass up Rory in Augusta,” he said. “There are five players who have achieved a career Grand Slam, and the sixth player to do it has done so. He is in rare form.
“We always knew he had a special talent. I always believed he would eventually win the Masters and complete a Grand Slam. That is my moment of the year.
“I remember playing early that Sunday morning and watching the highs and lows of his rounds like a fan. I just wanted to be there and experience it for myself.”
