More than a million people have become refugees in Lebanon as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran continues to affect the wider region.
This comes after Israel issued an evacuation order for most of its southern region. Israel has stepped up operations against the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon after it fired rockets into northern Israel earlier this month. Hezbollah has continued to fire rockets at Israel since then.
With shelters overwhelmed, many families are sleeping in makeshift tents in cars or in open spaces amid extreme weather conditions. Among them are children and pregnant women.
Most of the families come from areas where Hezbollah has significant support, including Beirut’s southern suburbs known as Dahieh.
One child told the BBC she was “ashamed” to be sleeping on the streets after her family was forced to flee their Beirut home.
Hugo Bachega, the BBC’s Middle East correspondent, spoke to hundreds of refugee families about the realities of living in conflict in Lebanon.
