The family of the British couple, who was detained for almost eight months by the Taliban, said in the release of the couple, “I was overwhelmed by thanks and relief.”
Peter Reynolds and his wife, Bobby, 76, were on their way home when 76 years old, who lived in Afghanistan for almost 20 years, stopped on February 1.
The couple were released on Friday morning through Qatar arbitration. An official of Qatar said that despite the long -term home, despite the Bami Jan in Afghanistan, he will fly to Qatar for medical inspection before traveling to England.
The Taliban said that the couple had been released after the judicial process of Afghanistan, but had never disclosed the reason for detention.
Their family said it was “a moment of tremendous joy.” “I expressed my deepest gratitude to everyone who played a role in securing the release,” he added.
“This experience reminded the power of diplomacy, empathy and international cooperation,” he said.
“As long as parents regain health and spend time with their families, the path of recovery will be longer. Today is a day of joy and relief today.”
The family given special praise for the British government’s diplomatic efforts and the support of the United States and the United Nations, as well as special praise for the “firm support” of Katar Lari mediators.
Peter and Barbie Reynolds were married in Kabul in 1970, and in the last 18 years, when armed groups have regained power in 2021, they have operated a charity education program approved by local Taliban officials.
They were depicted by their families for lifelong love for Afghanistan, and when many other Westerners left in August 2021, the authoritarian regime seized control and decided to stay there.
Their release follows a few months of public lobby of the family who depicts the terrible conditions of detention.
Jonathan Reynolds, the son of a couple, said in July, his father was suffering from serious convulsions, and his mother was “paralyzed” from anemia and malnutrition.
“Dad was tied to murderers and criminals,” he added at the time that he was held in the basement for six weeks without sunlight.
Reynolds responded to the news released on Friday and said in the BBC breakfast:
Their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, previously said her father had suffered a mini stroke, and the United Nations warned that the couple had an irreversible damage without medical services.
Qatar governmentSix days ago, an American woman, who was detained with them, told the BBC that he was literally dying.
Faye Hall, who had been detained for two months, stressed that the health of the elderly couple was rapidly deteriorated while in jail.
An official from Qatar said the BBC A couple moved to a larger facility in Cabul’s central prison, which had a better condition at the final negotiations on the release.
handoutAn official also said that the Embassy in Qatar in Kabul provided drugs, approached the doctor, and communicated with the family while in prison.
The Taliban officials claimed that they received appropriate medical services in prison and that human rights were respected.
The United Kingdom did not recognize the Taliban government and closed the embassy in Kabul when the group returned to power.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that Afghanistan’s support for British people is “very limited” and advises them to travel to all countries.
An official from the Taliban said Peter and Barbie Reynolds were handed over to Richard Lindsay, who took a photo with a couple on a catar, to a special envoy in England.
The Hamish Falconer, Minister of Middle East, was relieved that the pair was now released.
He said that Britain worked “intensively.” Qatar played an essential role in this case, which is very grateful.
