The browser wars entered a new phase this year. Fighting is no longer just about search results. It’s a question of which company’s AI will act on your behalf within the browser. Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari still dominate the overall market, and Chrome’s dominance largely comes from how aggressively it has applied generative AI to search. But 2026 will see an influx of new entrants, from well-funded startups to tech giants. Everyone anticipates that browsers will become less of a window to the web and more of a secondary role that performs tasks for users.
Users looking for alternatives to Chrome and Safari can choose from a growing variety of browsers looking to challenge the industry giants. To help you navigate the competitive landscape, we’ve put together an overview of some of the best alternative browsers available today. These include browsers that leverage AI, open source browsers that promote customization and privacy, and “attentive browsers,” a new term for browsers designed to improve user well-being.
AI-powered browser

Comet of Perplexity
Perplexity is the latest startup to launch an AI-powered web browser. The company’s new product, called Comet, acts as a chatbot-based search engine and can perform tasks such as summarizing emails, navigating web pages, and performing tasks such as sending calendar invitations. It’s currently only available to users on Perplexity’s $200 per month Max plan, but there’s also a waiting list for people to sign up.
Dia from the browser company

The Browser Company, the startup behind the Arc browser, recently launched Dia, an AI-centric browser similar to Google Chrome but with AI chat tools.
Dia, currently available in an invite-only beta, is designed to make it easier for users to navigate the web. You can see every website you’ve visited and every website you’re logged into, helping you find information and get things done. For example, Dia can provide information about the page you are currently browsing, answer questions about products, and summarize uploaded files.
To get early access to Dia, users must be an Arc member. Non-members can also join the waiting list.
neon of opera

Another recent entrant to the AI agent browser wars is Opera’s Neon. It has situational awareness and can perform tasks such as researching, shopping, and writing code snippets. In particular, tasks can be performed even while the user is offline.
Neon is currently available for macOS and Windows. Subscription costs $19.90 per month.
OpenAI’s Atlas

OpenAI recently released an AI-powered web browser called Atlas. Browsers allow users to ask ChatGPT for search results and navigate websites within the chatbot, instead of navigating to external links. There is also an “Agent Mode” where users can ask ChatGPT to complete tasks on their behalf.
Atlas was first rumored to be released in July. However, it only became available on macOS in October. It will be released soon for Windows, iOS, and Android devices.
aside
Aside, backed by Y Combinator, is an upcoming AI-first browser-based automation platform built to autonomously complete tasks, fill out forms, and manage data on behalf of users. The company describes this experience simply: “Please provide your password, browsing history, and browser context.” Unlike traditional automation tools that rely on integrations, Aside works directly within the browser itself, allowing it to work across Gmail, Notion, Slack, Figma, and banking platforms.
Users can sign up for a waitlist before launch.
jatter
Jitter launched its AI-powered browser in June, giving users the ability to ask questions about web pages, discover relevant insights, and receive personalized recommendations based on their browsing activity. Jitter also offers an integrated Notes app so you can learn from its content, summarize notes, and mark key details.
Jitter is currently available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android devices. It’s free to use, but there is an optional subscription of $10 per month.
A privacy-focused browser

brave
Brave is one of the most popular privacy-first browsers for its built-in ad and tracker blocking features. It also takes a gamified approach to exploration, rewarding users with its own cryptocurrency called Basic Attention Token (BAT). When users choose to see ads that support their favorite websites, we get a share of the advertising revenue. Additional features include a VPN service, AI assistant, and video calling capabilities.
Ori Duck

DuckDuckGo is another browser that many people are probably already familiar with thanks to its search engine of the same name. Founded in 2008, the company has recently invested heavily in its browser to stay competitive by introducing generative AI features like chatbots. We’ve also enhanced our fraud protection capabilities to detect a wide range of scams, including fake cryptocurrency exchanges, scareware tactics, and fraudulent e-commerce websites. In addition to blocking scams, DuckDuckGo prevents trackers and ads, and doesn’t track user data, which reduces the number of pop-ups you see.
ladybug

Ladybird, led by GitHub co-founder and former CEO Chris Wanstrath, has an ambitious mission compared to its competitors. We aim to build a completely new open source browser from the ground up. This means not relying on code from existing browsers, a feat rarely achieved. Most alternative web browsers rely on the Chromium open source project maintained by Google, which is the most widely used base for many browsers.
Like other privacy-focused browsers, Ladybird offers features to minimize data collection, including a built-in ad blocker and the ability to block third-party cookies. The browser hasn’t been released yet, with an alpha version scheduled for release in 2026 for early adopters, and will be available for Linux and macOS.
Vivaldi

Vivaldi is a Chromium-based browser created by one of the original developers of the Opera browser. Its biggest selling point is its customizable user interface that allows users to change its appearance and enable or disable features. One unique feature is that the color of your browser window changes to match the website you are currently viewing. Other key features include ad blocking, password manager, no user data tracking, and productivity tools like calendar and notes.
niche browser

water opera
Opera launched its Air browser in February, making it one of the industry’s first mindfulness-themed browsers. Opera Air works like a typical web browser but includes unique features designed to support mental health. These features consist of relaxation reminders and breathing exercises. Another feature called “Boosts” offers a variety of binaural beats to help improve concentration or relaxation.
Sigma OS

SigmaOS is a Mac-only browser with a workspace-style interface that emphasizes productivity. By displaying tabs vertically, users can treat tabs like a to-do list where they can mark them as done or snooze them for later. Users can create workspaces, which are essentially groups of tabs, to better organize different activities, including separating work and entertainment.
This Y Combinator-backed browser has been around for a few years, and most recently began introducing more AI features, including the ability to summarize various elements of a web page like ratings, reviews, and prices. There are also AI assistants that can answer questions, translate text, and rewrite content.
SigmaOS is free to use, but users who want more than three workspaces can sign up for an $8 per month plan that provides unlimited workspaces.
zen browser

Zen Browser aims to create a “calmer Internet” through its open source browser. Zen allows users to organize tabs into workspaces and offers a split view that lets you view two tabs side by side, among other productivity-focused features. Users can also enhance their browsing experience by using community-made plugins and themes, such as a mod that makes tab backgrounds transparent.
