The FDA reported another salmonella outbreak traced to moringa leaf powder.

The FDA is investigating a new outbreak of salmonella illness caused by moringa leaf powder. This time, MOGO brand capsules were involved.

New outbreak of salmonella Typhimurium has infected 18 people in 14 states. Seven people required hospitalization, but no deaths were reported, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

This outbreak is separate from two previous outbreaks caused by different moringa leaf powders. The current outbreak has been traced to MOGO brand moringa powder capsules distributed by MOGO Moringa LLC of St. Louis, Missouri.

The illness began between February 3 and April 7 this year. Five of the seven people interviewed (71%) reported taking moringa powder capsules, four of whom reported taking MOGO brand moringa powder capsules.

Currently affected patients live in California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington.

There are likely to be many more patients with infectious diseases who are not included in the official count. This is because some people do not receive treatment and others are not specifically tested for salmonella infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that for every patient confirmed to have a salmonella outbreak, there are 29 undetected cases.

Two outbreaks have been traced to moringa leaf powder products in recent months.

One case reported 10 people infected with salmonella across eight states. Illness began between September 26, 2025 and January 8, 2026. Seven out of eight people interviewed reported taking Rosabella brand moringa powder capsules. There were 3 hospitalizations.

As part of the investigation, the Indiana State Department of Health collected unopened product samples from the sick person’s home. The sample tested positive for Salmonella Newport. Whole genome sequencing Analysis shows that it is the same strain of Salmonella Newport that is causing illness in this outbreak.

In response to this investigation, Ambrosia Brands LLC recalled certain lots of Rosabella brand moringa powder capsules on February 13, 2026. The recalled products were available for sale nationwide and internationally. Products that tested positive for salmonella were also included in the recall. Although the product should no longer be on the market, consumers are encouraged to check the product at home due to its long shelf life.

In another salmonella outbreak traced to moringa powder, the CDC reported a total of 97 cases in 32 states. Of the 67 people interviewed, 59 reported taking products containing moringa leaf powder, with 55 reporting taking only Live it Up brand Super Greens supplement powder, three reporting taking only Why Not Natural moringa powder capsules, and one reporting taking both products. There were 26 hospitalizations, but no deaths were reported.

Products associated with the diseases associated with this outbreak have a long shelf life. About salmonella infection
Food contaminated with salmonella typically does not look, smell or taste spoiled. Anyone can get sick from a salmonella infection. Infants, young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for serious illness because their immune systems are weaker.

Anyone who consumes moringa leaf powder products and develops symptoms of salmonella infection should seek medical attention. Diagnosing salmonellosis requires special testing, so sick people should tell their doctor about possible exposure to salmonella. Salmonella infection symptoms can be similar to other illnesses and often lead to misdiagnosis.

Symptoms of salmonella infection may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Otherwise healthy adults usually become sick for 4 to 7 days. However, in some cases, diarrhea may be so severe that hospitalization may be necessary.

People with weakened immune systems, such as older adults, children, pregnant women, and cancer patients, are more likely to develop serious and sometimes life-threatening conditions.

Some people become infected without feeling sick or showing any symptoms. However, they can still spread the infection to other people.
