Sirens blared across much of northern Israel early Sunday morning. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said more than 100 rockets had been fired across the border overnight.
It said 85 more were launched later that morning.
Footage posted online, which has not yet been verified by the BBC, appears to show a fire breaking out in a residential area near Haifa.
Israel Defense Forces spokesman Major General Daniel Hagari said on Saturday that dozens of Israeli warplanes had launched a “massive” attack on southern Lebanon “after detecting Hezbollah preparing to fire on Israeli territory.”
The evening before Israel’s airstrikes began, the IDF said the strikes had destroyed “approximately 180 facilities and thousands of (rocket) launchers.”
Details of the Israeli airstrikes on Sunday are not yet known.
Earlier this week, pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah were detonated across Lebanon over two days, killing 39 people and injuring thousands more. Hezbollah is a politically influential group backed by Iran.
On Thursday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah held Israel accountable for the attack, saying it had “crossed all red lines” and vowed “just punishment.”
Israel has not claimed responsibility.
The U.N.’s top human rights official, Folker Turk, said the pager and walkie-talkie explosions violated international humanitarian law.
