This is alien to Patrick Mahomes. This is alien to Andy Reid’s dynasty team. The Kansas City Chiefs are on the brink of being eliminated from the NFL playoffs. And that could happen as early as this weekend.
Kansas City has won five of the last six Super Bowls, including three in a row. They have advanced to the AFC Conference Championship Game for seven consecutive seasons, made the playoffs for 10 consecutive seasons, and won the AFC West title for 9 consecutive years. This just ended with the Denver Broncos being too far ahead.
However, they are 6-7 this year, sitting in 3rd place in their division, and looking towards the end of the season ahead.
Here’s how the Chiefs could fall out of playoff contention in Week 15.
- The Chiefs lost to the Chargers, the Jaguars beat the Jets, the Bills beat the Patriots, and the Texans beat the Cardinals.

The Chiefs are coming off an ugly 20-10 loss to the Houston Texans at Arrowhead. Meanwhile, Mahomes was intercepted three times in one of his worst performances of the season and saw Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice drop catchable balls in crucial moments of the game.
It was a familiar story of a stagnant attack crawling dangerously towards complete collapse for some time now, with even Steve Spagnuolo’s defense no longer able to compensate for his side’s shortcomings on the other side of the ball.
“We’re in unprecedented territory. I’ve never been in a place since I’ve been here,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said.
“Not all the guys that win the championship have always been pretty, but it will test what kind of character we have. I don’t know what the percentage is. I know it’s not high, but to get to the playoffs would be special.”
Between wins over the then-flying Indianapolis Colts and unusually suppressed Detroit Lions, there were sporadic flickers that the Chiefs would somehow carve a path to the postseason. However, it has never been able to generate revenue with consistent execution.
Kansas City’s passing attack still ranks fourth in the league in yards per game, seventh in dropback EPA, and Mahomes ranks third in passing yards among quarterbacks. But too often, Mahomes tries to make the magic happen on his own.
“We have Pat Mahomes, right? To be honest, we always have a chance,” defensive lineman Chris Jones said this week.
However, they have been in mediocre form for much of the campaign, no longer able to rely on the one-run steals they did last season.
They now face a Los Angeles Chargers team that was on fire with Monday’s dramatic overtime win over the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles at SoFi Stadium. Jim Harbaugh’s team is 9-4 and nearing a return to the playoffs.
“I want to play memorable football and have meaningful games in December and January,” Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert said. “It’s the type of game you need to win. We have enormous respect for our opponents and they are very good.”
