The moment the German power plant cooling tower is demolished

The moment the cooling tower of the abandoned power plant in Grevenbroich, Germany was demolished and the huge structure collapsed was captured on video.

Clouds of white smoke rose into the air and some onlookers in attendance applauded as a controlled explosion occurred at the Primersdorf power plant.

One local resident said it was “strange” to see the gap left by the missing tower, but said it should be demolished to keep up with the times.

Georg Bung, project director at German energy company RWE, said the space would be used for several purposes, including a large-scale data center.

The lignite-fired power plant has been decommissioned and is now partially demolished under Germany’s coal phase-out law.
