The new denim – not jeans – a note on style

COS Shirt Jacket, Pants, Sweater

Denim will always have a place in my wardrobe, but jeans haven’t been the focus this season. Sure, I’ll still wear them heavily, but as far as eyeing new things goes, separates are leading the way. I stopped by my local COS store and was presented with two options: a shirt jacket and a straight skirt. I bought both. Denim is very light, so it’s great for layering now and even in the fall. I love the simplicity of both. In particular, the beauty that comes from the silhouette due to the lack of hardware on the shirt jacket is interesting. Subtle side tie details add charm. I bought size 4 and it is roomy.

The denim skirt and top matching was a set I was looking forward to, but the fit of the top was disappointing. Still, the skirt was perfect. I love it as a new no-nonsense staple. For now I’ll start wearing it with a light poplin shirt tucked in and sandals, and as the weather gets colder I’ll add a sweater and loafers or ballerinas. Both sizes 4 and 6 were fine, but I went with size 6, so the waist went down a little.

Denim jackets from The Row, Brandon Maxwell (and here) and DL1961.

And then there’s the simple jean jacket, reinterpreted in a fresh silhouette. The Row’s oversized Ness jacket in dark Japanese Supima cotton (available here) is great. Throwing it over your shoulder is more speed than pairing it with matching denim. For a softer feel, we love the gathered hem on Brandon Maxwell’s faded denim jacket. It has a great presence and will complement a variety of looks. Shaped construction includes the DL1961 utility jacket. Self-belts are great for adding excess volume, but they also look great buttoned or loose.
