Charley Hull and partner Michael Brennan were one of two teams to set a new scoring record at the Grant Thornton Invitational, shooting a 17-under 55 on the first day of the mixed team event.
Lexi Thompson and Wyndham Clark are also tied for the lead after shooting 55s in the opening round, with both teams posting just three pars in the scramble format.
Hull and Brennan played 13 straight holes with a birdie or eagle at one stage, but had to settle for par on the 16th and 18th holes.
Brennan, who started the year on the PGA Tour in the United States and won the Utah Bank Championship on exemption, was filling in for Daniel Berger, whose partner Hull was originally slated to play.
Thompson and Clark had birdies or eagles on nine of their final 10 holes, except for the par-3 16th.
The pair’s score of 55 broke the previous record by one round in a mixed team event featuring PGA and LPGA Tour players that began three years ago.
They are two shots behind Lauren Coughlin and Andrew Novak at 15 under par. Rose Zhang and Michael Kim, Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy, and Jennifer Kupcho and Chris Gotterup took a step back on day two.
Defending champions Jake Knapp and Patty Tavatanakit were 7 under through six holes and played their final seven holes at 5 under for a 59, four strokes behind.
On Saturday the format will change to foursomes, with the final round on Sunday modified to four-ball.
