Sometimes it’s bream. Others are wahoo or rockfish. But it’s always a masterpiece. And it is an integral part of Bermuda’s fabric.
On this Atlantic island, a fish sandwich is more than just lunch. It’s not just one meal. It is a fiercely contested, endlessly dismantled, and heavily guarded national treasure.
And it’s one of the best foods you’ll ever eat.
Of course, which is best is a matter of endless debate. Taxi drivers at the airport may prefer Mamma Mia. Your hotel bartender might say Seaside Grill. Politicians, lawyers, and executives all have their favorites. Maybe a hundred miles. Or any number of other outposts.
What is not up for debate is the point. Two slices of toasted raisin bread, fried local fish (including one of the types mentioned above), tartar sauce, lettuce, tomato and cabbage salad. Sometimes it tastes good. Other, cheese.
The results are definitely surprising. No matter where you turn,
I am a fish connoisseur. Being a pescatarian for a long time and traveling the Caribbean for 20 years means I have tried almost every type of fish in every possible preparation. These include fish sandwiches, from Barbados’ flying fish cutter to Barbados’ bread and shark dish.
This is another level. The breading, batter, freshness and sheer size of the fish are fantastic. This is not a small sandwich. Traditionally, it contains so many pieces of fish that the toasted raisin bread cannot fit within its rim. I would note that holding it all together is definitely a skill, a skill honed over many years of professionally handling fish sandwiches. And for beginners, that means you’ll likely end up eating something more similar to a plate of fish and a side of bread.
But that’s part of the charm of this dish and what keeps you coming back for more.
So what about the taste itself? The subtle sweetness of the bread pairs perfectly with the fresh, salty fish and the delicious, crunchy dough. The latter is particularly impressive. It’s the kind of batter you rarely find even in the best pieces of fish. The quality is closer to fried chicken than fish and the batter is very welcome. Another note: It pairs exquisitely with a glass of Gosling’s Rum.
My favorite fish sandwich of a recent stay was a perfectly made fish sandwich (and a bit tasty too) at the Astwood Arms pub in Hamilton.
Bermuda has a lot to offer, from golf to beaches to a refreshing, cool atmosphere. But this sandwich alone is a reason to come here. It’s the best fish sandwich you’ve ever had or will ever have. And it’s probably the best sandwich ever.
But I have a more curious question. What is the best fish sandwich in Bermuda?
That’s what you’re eating right now.
