‘They shouted Jews, IDF’: Israeli soccer fans describe attack in Amsterdam

Some Israeli soccer fans said they were ordered to show their passports at the start of matches.

Gal Binyanmin Tshuva, 29, told the BBC she was attacked outside the casino after watching another football match on Wednesday.

“About 20 people ran towards us. When I asked where they were from, they said they were from Greece. They couldn’t believe me and asked me to show them their passports.”

When he said he didn’t have it, the men beat him, pushed him to the ground and kicked him in the face, Mr Chuba said.

“I don’t remember anything after that. I woke up in the ambulance with blood on my face and realized I had two broken teeth.”

Aaron and Jacob, two Jewish British men, told the BBC they went to the game but left early.

They then said they saw men shouting anti-Semitic threats and trampling on an Israeli man. They intervened, helped the man up and walked away.

Soon after, a group asked the men if they were Jewish, and Aaron said they were British.

“But they said, ‘You helped the Jews,’ and he hit me in the face and broke my glasses,” Aaron said.

“I was bleeding and had a black eye. “I’m fine, but I’m a little nervous.”

The BBC has seen photos of Aaron with blood streaming down his nose, swollen eyes and other cuts on his face.

Esther Voet, editor-in-chief of the Dutch Jewish weekly newspaper, lives in the city centre. She said she offered her home to Israeli fans after seeing scenes of violence.

“I told them that this was a Jewish home and that it was safe,” she told Israeli public broadcaster Khan. “People were really scared. They never imagined something like this would happen in Amsterdam.”

Dutch police said Israeli fans suffered ‘severe abuse’ following a ‘hit-and-run’ attack carried out by youths on scooters.
