Some media commentators have said that President Trump will not pay any attention to these protests because he has nothing to lose as a sitting president. This way of thinking is misleading. And we’ve seen this before. I remember the 1969 Vietnam anti-war march in Washington past the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue. At the time, President Nixon told the press that he did not know because he was watching a football game. The football game was more important in the end. Watergate showed how obsessed he was with protests. The obsession is also depicted in Oliver Stone’s film “Nixon.” The biggest risk now is that the protest movement will be absorbed into the campaigns of Democratic candidates in the midterm elections. Something similar happened during the Black Lives Matter protests leading up to Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign. If for no other reason than the Democratic establishment’s proximity to the Republican Party’s pro-war stance, the protest movement must be independent of, and at times critical of, the Democratic Party.
