This 6-star luxury Caribbean resort features cliffside villas, plunge pools, and Dominican soul.

A secluded beach accessible by kayak. A cliffside villa floating over the open Caribbean sea. Private plunge pool overlooking the horizon. Rainforest at your back. There are no crowds. There is no central scene. This is Secret Bay.

And on islands like Dominica, this combination changes the definition of luxury.

Dominica is vertical. The mountain rises sharply from the sea. Rivers run through the interior in all directions. The sand is often dark, the coastline is rugged, and the terrain is physical. They come here to hike to waterfalls, swim through narrow canyons and stand on the edge of volcanic lakes steaming in the cool mountain air. The island does not reshape itself for visitors.

Secret Bay isn’t trying to change that either. It’s built on that.

Why Dominica Improves Your Experience

On other islands, luxury can depend on predictability: wide beaches, calm shallow waters, and generous footprints. Dominica provides terrain instead. The weather changes quickly. The trade winds push the cliff face hard. Offshore, the deep Atlantic waterway draws marine life closer to land. Trails inland climb quickly and descend even faster.

Secret Bay serves as the control point for everything. The journey is accurately mapped. Guides are assigned based on terrain and conditions. Whale watching departures track coastal migration patterns. Gorge swims through Titou Gorge are timed, so you can return before light falls behind the ridge. The waterfall hike is tailored to your own pace rather than a preset group tempo.

As air access to Dominica expands and regional connectivity improves, reaching the island has become much simpler. What once felt distant now feels intentional rather than complex. These changes have repositioned Secret Bay from an insider’s favorite to one of the most glamorous upscale resorts in the Caribbean.

Villa Interiors: Exposure, Fabrication and Control

The villa is where promises become concrete.

Each stands alone along the cliff, and is sufficiently staggered that there is no sense of any other guests on deck. Some terraces offer unobstructed views straight out to the sea. Elsewhere you can see the coastline curving, thick green hills falling sharply into the sea. There is complete privacy without feeling forced.

When the glass wall disappears completely, the character of the living room changes. The border between inside and outside becomes almost thin. Air moves freely through the structure. The sound of waves can be heard more clearly. After it rains, the smell of wet leaves spreads across the deck. When the panels are closed, the villa becomes a cooler, quieter haven. When you open it again, the island comes back in.

Plunge pools require great care. These are not decorative rectangles placed for effect. They are deep enough to be completely submerged, long enough to stretch out, and are positioned at the edge of the terrace so that when leaned against the far wall, the water meets the horizon. Swimming at sunset softens the boundary between the pool and the sea. At night, the deck lights are dim, leaving only the stars reflecting on the surface.

The kitchen functions like a real kitchen. Full size frozen. Induction cooktop. A decent knife. Stone countertops that resist moisture. If you have a personal chef preparing your dinner, the infrastructure supports it, so the workflow feels seamless. If you decide to cook it yourself, nothing is secondary.

The bedroom faces outward. Floor-to-ceiling glass frames the ocean from the bed, allowing the first light to come in gradually, filtering through the surrounding canopy rather than bursting through the bare exposure. Linen is durable and feels cool against the skin. Storage space is ample without overwhelming the room. The climate system responds quickly, but cross winds often make it unnecessary.

The bathroom maintains the same clarity. Deep soaking tubs can be placed near open walls or large windows to provide ocean views without compromising privacy. The outdoor rain shower is set in a garden courtyard protected by lush vegetation. Water pressure remains strong and constant even at high altitudes. These are details that demonstrate the serious engineering of this mountainous island.

The technology exists, but it is limited. Lighting is layered and adjustable. Wi-Fi is stable. The sound system is neatly integrated into the architecture. Nothing blinks or competes with the settings.

The overall effect is comfortable, but the execution is sharper. You can host long dinners on the terrace, take a swim before bed, leave a glass open all night long or seal your villa cool and quiet. The control is yours.

The best part? Your personal concierge who will carefully manage every aspect of your stay to suit your desired level of involvement.

Culinary programs competing at the highest level

The food here lives up to its mark. This is not surprising considering that it is part of a select group of hotels in the Caribbean region that are part of Relais and Chateaux.

Although Secret Bay operates to the standards of a globally respected culinary collective, its expression remains rooted in its Dominican roots. The kitchen builds the menu around freshly arrived ingredients such as caught fish, island vegetables, tropical fruits and local herbs, creating a structured tasting process that feels calm and measured.

If you wish, you can eat all your meals in your room. Or you can savor the experience at one of two restaurants, Bwa Denn Kitchen, surrounded by Caribbean art, or the chef’s table called Botanica.

Wine pairings are thoughtful and understated. The course moves at a steady pace, so conversations and set-ups go smoothly.

Of course, private dining raises the bar even higher. A multi-course dinner on the terrace is more of a curated culinary event than room service. The team absorbs dietary preferences early and implements them without repetition. Timings are aligned with evening hours rather than the other way around. Disclaimer: I actually honeymooned here, and 10 years later it still remains one of my signature Caribbean experiences. So did a private local band that showed me the sunset from the lower deck of my villa before dinner.

Consistency is ultimately what stands out. On islands where supply chains can be complex, operational depth is needed to maintain a level of culinary precision. The result is a meal that feels like one of the pillars of your stay rather than an accessory to it.

Beach, water, and movement

Tebay Beach below the resort is a small beach surrounded by rocks and vegetation. You can reach your destination by going down a forested path or kayaking and paddling along the coast. This separation protects privacy. There are no far-reaching couches. Just sand, waves and cliffs.

Kayaks and paddleboards are arranged for independent exploration. Sea caves highlight the nearby coastline. Snorkeling begins right offshore. Boats go further out to meet whales in deeper Atlantic waters.

Every activity connects back to the terrain. You are not floating in a controlled lagoon. You are participating in the open sea, after which you return to a stable infrastructure.

Nassif Vision

Secret Bay exists because of its long-term focus.

Gregor Nassief grew up exploring the north coast of Dominica. Over nearly 20 years, land parcels were carefully assembled to form the resort’s footprint. Development proceeded gradually. Plants were preserved as much as possible. The structures were placed along the cliffs rather than dominating them.

That patience is on display today. The villa occupies the hillside without overwhelming it. Expansion was measured. Density remains low. Your privacy remains intact.

In a region where rapid growth often dilutes character, Secret Bay’s restraint sets it apart.

Secret Bay Prices

Rates at Secret Bay start at about $2,640 in April. This is one of the area’s true bucket list experiences.

Why I Feel Complete

The term “six star” is often used loosely in the hospitality industry. Here it reflects execution rather than excess.

Arrival logistics are clean. Transfer times are fixed. Trips are verified and recalibrated as needed. Meals are flexible. Your personal information is protected. Employees have strong memories. Preferences persist without repetition.

At the same time, nothing feels staged. The island still exists – the wind crashing against the cliffs, the waves crashing against the rocks, the forests moving overhead.

And because Dominica itself remains one of the most physically unique destinations in the Caribbean – mountains, rivers, whale watching and geological activity – the resort has inherited that character. In response, luxury becomes more vivid.

Secluded bay. Rainforest cliffs. A plunge pool suspended over open water. For most islands, that’s enough. In Dominica, it’s much more than that.

This is not only one of the best luxury resorts in the Caribbean, but one of the best in the world.
