The other side of Negril

Most people know Negril for Seven Mile Beach, a long stretch of white sand lined with resorts, beach bars, and water sports operators.

The West End has a completely different feel.

Here, limestone cliffs give way to wide beaches. Small hotels, restaurants and bars appear among tropical gardens and rocky bays. Swimming means climbing down a ladder or directly from a stone platform into deep blue water.

Rockhouse is one of the most closely associated hotels this side of Negril.

Villas and rooms are spread out over 8 acres of gardens above Pristine Cove. Stone paths lead between the thatched roofs, outdoor showers, restaurant, spa and the sea. The design is distinctively Jamaican, filled with local wood, stone and handcrafted furniture, rather than the familiar visual language of the Caribbean’s larger resorts.

Came here to spend a long lunch swimming off the cliffs, staying by the pool and looking out over the water.

Rooms and villas

Entry-level rooms are in the hotel’s Garden and Studio categories and offer the best value in the hotel.

The studio has a four-poster bed, private outdoor space and the natural materials that define the hotel. Garden Rooms are set amidst tropical landscaping and are within walking distance of the swimming pool, restaurant and swimming area.

swimming off the cliff

Rockhouse does not have a traditional beach. The Caribbean Sea is accessed via a ladder and stone entrance built into the cliff.

The water below the hotel is generally clear enough for snorkeling, and there is coral and marine life near the property. You can swim under the cliffs, float in the cove or climb back up to the terrace overlooking the water.

The infinity pool is another focal point of the hotel. It stretches along the cliffs at 60 feet high and offers panoramic views of the ocean.

The lack of a beach is also part of what makes the experience memorable. Accommodation is centered around the cliffs themselves, including diving, snorkeling, floating and observing the water from above.

What the $152 Fee Means

For a hotel of Rockhouse’s stature, rates starting at $152 per night are especially noteworthy.
