Completed in February, the massive Tower of Jesus Christ raises the church to a height of 172.5 meters (566 feet), firmly establishing it as the world’s tallest church.
His visit to the iconic basilica also marks the 100th anniversary of the death of architect Antoni Gaudí.
The Spanish royal family, King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also attended the event.
The week-long visit to Spain, which began Saturday, is the first by a pope in about 15 years.
