Tobago’s inclusion on the list is due to its unbiased appreciation of the island’s natural beauty. It also starts a conversation about Main Ridge Forest Reserve. The reserve is the world’s oldest legally protected forest reserve established for conservation purposes. This protected area benefited from legislation enacted in 1776 – 250 years ago.
Main Ridge is located in the UNESCO-designated Northeast Tobago Biosphere Reserve. It is home to more than 660 plant species, 128 bird species, 37 mammal species and 22 non-venomous snake species, some of which are native to Tobago. The sanctuary is a must-see for birdwatching, wildlife spotting and trekking visitors.
