Primary hyperoxaluria is a rare genetic disorder in which the body produces too much of a substance called oxalate.
If too much oxalate builds up in the kidneys and binds with calcium, it can form kidney stones, which can eventually lead to kidney failure.

There are three types of HP:
HP1
HP2
HP3
Treatment options depend on the type of PH, but the goal of treatment for all types of PH is to prevent oxalate from accumulating in the kidneys and other parts of the body.

Some treatment and management options include:
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
High doses of vitamin B6 may help lower oxalate levels. This treatment works for about 3 out of 10 people. This is only useful for HP1 patients.

prescription drugs
Lumasiran and nedosiran can be given by injection under the skin to lower oxalate levels. This drug is only useful for patients with HP1.

Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of fluids (especially water) every day can help flush oxalates from your body.

citrate or bicarbonate salt
Too much acid in your urine increases your risk of kidney stones. Take citrate and bicarbonate salts such as:
potassium citrate
potassium bicarbonate
sodium citrate
baking soda
It can reduce the acidity of urine.

Avoid high levels of vitamin C
Too much vitamin C in your diet through food or supplements can increase oxalates.
Slide 9:
Avoid foods high in oxalate
Foods high in oxalate include:
dried fruit
chocolate
sweet potato
plum
sugar beet
rhubarb
spinach
tofu
strawberry
If you decide to eat these foods, also eat foods high in calcium to prevent oxalates from reaching the kidneys and causing kidney stones.

The effectiveness of primary hyperoxaluria treatment depends on your overall health and how severe your condition is.
