Two weeks after the ban that forced Anthropic to pull its powerful cybersecurity-oriented models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, from the market, the Trump administration is softening its stance.
Now Anthropic is allowing Mythos 5 to be used by more than 100 specific U.S. government agencies and companies, including allowing non-American employees of those organizations to access the model, Semafor and Reuters report. The list also includes non-American employees of Anthropic, who were included in the original ban that prevented non-Americans from accessing the models.
“We have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to ensure that certain trusted partners have access to the Claude Mythos 5 model,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Tom Brown, Anthropic’s chief computer officer, on Friday, according to a letter seen by Semafor.
Apparently, the administration did not address the release of Fable 5 in this guidance. This is the Mythos 5 version, which was widely released a few days before the ban and was said to have more protection features. Both models were withdrawn after security researchers easily bypassed those guardrails. Anthropic did not immediately respond to our request for comment.
Anthropic publicly acknowledged the progress in a post to We continue to work with the government to transition to Mythos 5 and bring Fable 5 back to general use.”
