Trump-Musk Interview Begins, Ruined by Technical Issues

“I hope for an exciting and inspiring future where people can be hopeful, optimistic and excited about what’s coming next,” Musk said.

The conversation didn't get off to a very good start.

In fact, more than 20 minutes into the livestream, many users were having trouble connecting to the live stream, which Musk blamed on a “massive DDOS attack on X” in his post.

A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to overload a website, making it difficult to use or access.

As the conversation between the two began, Musk said the cyberattack claim showed there was public opinion in the United States that was against Trump's words.

It is not yet clear what caused the technical issues with X Audio conversations or who is behind the attack.

“A DDoS attack sends out a very large number of signals to disrupt an online target,” Anthony Lim, director of Singapore's Centre for Strategic Cyberspace and International Studies, told the BBC.

“It is unlikely that this will only impact a single service or feature of the website.”

Mr Lim added that the service may have been temporarily interrupted as many people tried to listen in.

Musk later said in a post that he tested the system with “8 million concurrent listeners” before launching the live chat.

As the conversation progressed, X Space showed around 1 million people listening.

The bizarre opening is reminiscent of when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ran for the White House in May 2023, when it was hosted on X and the live stream didn't work out so well.

The conversation about X comes as former President and Republican presidential nominee Trump looks to reset his re-election campaign.

Polls show the race for the White House is set to get even more intense with Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

Harris' campaign has gained momentum since she became the Democratic frontrunner after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race last month.

Next week, Ms. Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, could get a bigger boost at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

The Trump campaign has criticized Harris since she accepted the nomination last month, saying she has been unwilling to give interviews and rarely takes questions from reporters.

On Monday, President Trump said of X that he was “glad we have a forum like this,” where he could speak at length.

Musk, whose platform hosted the event, has become an increasingly influential figure in politics.

He has over 190 million followers on X and regularly engages in political debates.

He recently joined a new political committee supporting Trump's campaign.
