Trump rushes off stage after gunshots heard at Pennsylvania rally

Secret Service agents removed former President Donald Trump from the stage after a shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The footage showed him grimacing and putting his hand to his right ear, before ducking down after a sharp sound, presumably a gunshot.

He was soon surrounded by secret agents and rushed from the stage to a waiting vehicle. He raised his fist as he was put into the vehicle.

Trump said in a post on the Truth Social network that the bullet struck the “top” of his right ear. His spokesman earlier said he was “fine” and receiving treatment at a local medical center.

“I knew immediately something was wrong. I heard a buzzing sound and a gunshot, and I immediately felt the bullet go through my skin,” Trump wrote. “I realized what was happening because I was bleeding profusely.”

Blood was clearly visible on Trump's ears and face as security guards rushed him away.

Law enforcement sources told the BBC's US partner CBS News that the suspect was shot dead at the scene by Secret Service agents. They added that the male attacker was carrying a rifle and was shooting from a tall structure hundreds of metres away.

President Trump said in a statement that the shooting left one bystander dead and another seriously injured.

The Secret Service said President Trump is safe and steps are being taken to protect him.

They added that an active investigation is currently underway and further information will be released as it becomes available.

The shooting began as the Republican presidential nominee began addressing supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania, a key battleground state in the November election.

Several explosions rang out as President Trump spoke about his successor, President Joe Biden, and his administration.

Several supporters holding placards in support of President Trump ducked when gunshots were heard.

Bystanders interviewed by the BBC said the shots may have come from a building on the first floor to the right of the stage where President Trump was speaking.

One witness, Greg, told the BBC that he spotted a suspicious person “crawling” on the roof of the building about five minutes before Trump took the stage. He said he pointed the person out to police.

“He had a rifle, and we could clearly see that he had a rifle,” he said. “We were pointing at him, and the police were walking around on the ground. We were like, ‘Hey, there’s a guy on the roof with a rifle,’ and the police didn’t know what was going on.”

Another witness, Jason, told the BBC he heard five gunshots, which came in rapid succession.

“I saw the Secret Service rushing to protect Trump. Everyone in the crowd was down very quickly,” he said.

“He got up shortly thereafter, raised his fist in the air and said a few words.”

The team (who also attended the rally) told the BBC that the gunshots sounded “explosive”.

“I saw a spray of water gushing out, which I thought was a fire hose at first, and the speaker on the right side started falling,” he said.

“Something must have hit the hydraulic line (causing it to fall). I saw President Trump fall to the ground, and then everyone else started falling to the ground because it was chaotic.”

Speaking in Delaware, President Biden condemned the attack, calling it “vicious.”

“There is no place in America for this kind of violence,” he said, adding that he hoped to speak with Trump in the coming hours. “Everyone should condemn this,” he said.
