The landmark nuclear deal announced between the United States and Saudi Arabia is contingent on Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords, i.e. recognizing the state of Israel, US President Donald Trump has said.
“A civilian nuclear agreement involving only non-military uses (there will be no material enrichment!) will be approved, but this is entirely contingent on Saudi Arabia joining the highly respected and successful Abraham Accords,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
President Trump’s remarks came after criticism from experts who said the agreement could pose a risk of future nuclear proliferation in an already unstable region.
The nuclear issue has been at the center of the months-long conflict between the United States and Israel and Iran.
In 2020, Trump brokered the Abraham Accords, which guaranteed the normalization of historic relations between Israel and two Arab countries, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain.
Sudan and Morocco subsequently normalized diplomatic relations with Israel.
