Two South African nationals killed in Nigeria as anti-immigrant attacks increase

Iroegbu was reportedly killed by police officers from the Tshwane Metro Police Station in Pretoria, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Joe, who was killed on June 28, was attacked outside his shop in the city of eMalaleni, the ministry said.

Abuja said it would “notify” the South African government and that “if South Africa’s intolerant and provocative tendencies and apartheid-style behavior against foreigners are not addressed, all options remain on the table.”

Nigeria said it would demand compensation from South Africa for its citizens who left the country, adding that Abuja had begun recording businesses and property left behind by Nigerians.

But at a press briefing on Friday, South African Cabinet Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said the government would not pay compensation and Nigerians could sell the registered properties they had left on the South African market.

She also said, “We want to know where the drug dens of Nigerians are so we can show them where they have been storing the drugs so we can rid South Africa of them very urgently.”

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the remarks in a statement on Sunday, calling them “unacceptable.”

“Derogatory, unprofessional and uncensored public comments by high-ranking public officials constitute hate speech,” the ministry said.
