Tyson Fury's desire for Oleksandr Usyk rematch questioned by Johnny Nelson | boxing news

sky sports boxing Johnny Nelson believes Tyson Fury will need to make changes to his corner if he is to beat Oleksandr Usyk in a rematch and has even questioned whether Fury has any desire for a rematch.

Fury appeared to be receiving mixed messages from his corner throughout his original match against Usyk. His father John Fury, trainer Sugar Hill Steward and assistant Andy Lee were all seen speaking to him.

The 35-year-old lost by split decision and on Wednesday a rematch between Fury and Usyk was confirmed for December 21 in Saudi Arabia…

Tyson Fury chose the wrong tactic. Did he learn his lesson? If so, he doesn't think the result will be the same. We saw the success he had between fights.

My main concern at times is Tyson's mental desire for this rematch, knowing that Usyk once got the better of him.

Tyson is an incredible historian of our sport. It will be very difficult for him to get his head around it and have some self-belief.

Former WBO cruiserweight world champion Nelson questions whether Fury can overcome the mental hurdle of losing to undisputed heavyweight champion Usyk.

If you've been at the top of the tree and believe you're the best in the world, it's very difficult to accept it when suddenly someone beats you no matter what.

It's very difficult to think, 'I did everything right, I prepared properly, I was in amazing shape.' This is the best condition we've seen him in for many years. So what can you change?

Fury must overcome mental trauma

Highlights of Usyk becoming undisputed world heavyweight champion after dramatic fight with Fury

A lot of things need to change in the back room. We heard three voices around the corner yelling at him left, right and center. I desperately thought he was ahead and misread the fight.

Tyson needs to have a serious conversation with his team. You need to have an ear, someone who listens and respects you, someone who can give you confidence by saying, 'You can do this and you can change this.'

Tyson is one of the best all-round fighters. He is a good boxer, a good fighter. But unfortunately, you might be too smart.

Speaking on the Toe2Toe podcast before the rematch was confirmed, George Groves and Ellie Scotney discussed the possible outcome of a second clash between Fury and Usyk.

Tyson outdid himself to the point where he had to send Usyk, a better boxer, to his outbox. He's not a better fighter, he's a better boxer.

Hopefully, he learned that lesson and thought, 'I'm not going to do that' and started using his body and everything that got him to this point in the first place. I think the biggest mountain to climb is the mental scars it leaves on him to deal with.

Should Fury switch teams?

Listen to Fury's corner during his loss to Usyk and decide if the former heavyweight champion had too many voices giving him advice.

There must be organization. He needs to get rid of the people out there who say 'yes, no, yes, no'.

He needs to get better and that's part of the responsibility of being a champion.

I'm not in this camp, but from what I've seen and what I've heard, that's exactly what he should be referring to. If he doesn't speak, it will be the same again.

Watch Usyk from ringside as he battled Fury for nine decisive rounds.

He needs one chef, one main voice, a voice he respects. If he doesn't, mark my words. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens again and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't get in the ring on December 21st.

It would be so difficult for that person to climb that mountain mentally once again. I understand the mindset of a fighter, and this is the first time Tyson Fury has tasted defeat like this.

He checked all the boxes and did everything right, except for the team around him.

John Fury's antics didn't help Tyson

WARNING: Video contains graphic images. Tyson Fury's father John gives his perspective on the clash between him and the Usyk camp in Riyadh.

Unfortunately we have a worldwide reputation for being hooligans in sport. What does having such fame and display say about us? What does that say about our sport? What does it say about sportsmen and sportswomen?

I don't think Tyson Fury needs that kind of distraction. Because I'm pretty sure that when the cameras were off, Tyson Fury said to his father, 'What's going on?'

During the interview, Usyk reacts after discovering a conflict between his team and John Fury.

It wasn't something to just ignore and ignore. If you see blood coming from your father's head, you will be worried about what happened. And you will see the knock-on effects of that.

I don't care who he is. That would have affected the status quo in some way during fight week. It doesn't have to be that way. Your main focus is who you fight with and get things done, not what happens during the week. That's the last thing you need.

Usyk should not change his strategy.

Andy Scott and John Dennen look back on the uncontroversial heavyweight clash and discuss whether referee Mark Nelson should have stopped Fury in the ninth round.

His speed was important. That made him stand out. He rode the storm. Fury could not match his work rate and Usyk's determination, conviction and hard work all paid off. For him, I would do the same. Why try to change anything?

Fury tried to send out a better boxer. He didn't try to fight him, but tried to outbox him and play him at his own game.

Usyk shouldn't be able to physically beat Fury, and he didn't have to. He just outboxed him and outlasted him.
