NUP spokesman Joel Senyonyi later revealed that an X-ray report showed that “Bobi Wine had a piece of shrapnel from a tear gas canister embedded in his leg”.
A police statement said an investigation would be launched to determine the facts.
Medical experts at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala told reporters that the NUP leader would undergo surgery to remove the shrapnel.
According to police, after Bobi Wine attended an event in Bulindo, “he and his team got out of their vehicle and formed a procession to Bulindo town”.
“But the police objected. Despite their instructions, he insisted on continuing… He blocked the road, which forced the police to intervene and stop the procession.
“It is alleged that he sustained injuries in the altercation that followed,” the statement said.
NUP said at least four NUP members were arrested during the fighting.
Opposition leader Kizza Besigye condemned the “dire consequences”, using the term “routine police attacks on political opponents”.
Bobi Wine was first elected to parliament in 2017 and ran against President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 election, which was marred by state repression.
He was popular with young people and was arrested and beaten several times.
Venezuela's security forces have a long history of pursuing political opponents of President Museveni, who has been in power for nearly 40 years.
