“Trump was implying that Venezuela is now a U.S. protectorate and thus serves at the pleasure of the U.S. president,” said Christopher Sabatini, senior fellow on Latin America at the Chatham House think tank. “She was also investigated by the DEA. There was no conviction, no bounty, no indictment, but the threat was there. The threat was, ‘We’ve got a thing on you.'” The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) would not comment when approached by the BBC.
