United Forced to Delay Flights on Two Routes Due to Increased FAA Oversight: Travel Weekly

United Airlines has postponed the launch of two international routes due to increased safety oversight by the FAA.

The airline was scheduled to launch a route between Newark and Faro, Portugal, on May 24, and between Tokyo Narita and the beach resort of Cebu in the Philippines on July 31.

The route to Faro, in Portugal's southern Algarve region, has been suspended until the summer of 2025, while flights to Cebu have been postponed to October 25.

United Airlines was set to be the only airline to fly between the U.S. and Faro this summer, and the only U.S. carrier to fly to Cebu.

Affected travelers can receive a refund or rebook free of charge on United partner airlines.

The FAA announced March 22 that it would increase oversight of United following a series of safety-related incidents last month. The agency said it would review United’s business processes and manuals and send more officials to inspect the airline’s facilities.

As part of that effort, the FAA also planned to suspend some certification procedures involving United Airlines.

United confirmed via email on Tuesday that the schedule changes in Paro and Cebu were a result of the suspension.
