UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson shot dead in New York

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in midtown Manhattan while walking to the New York Hilton Midtown for the company’s annual investor meeting. According to emerging media reports, Thompson was shot from about 20 feet away by a masked gunman who appeared to be waiting for Thompson and then escaped on a bicycle.

Law enforcement continued to canvass the area in the aftermath of the shooting. According to the New York Times, police said they were offering $10,000 to anyone with information about the attack.

Thompson, 50, was appointed CEO of United Healthcare, one of the largest U.S. health insurers, in April 2021 after more than 20 years of experience at the company, which began when he joined as director of corporate development.

UnitedHealthcare said in October that the personal health information of more than 100 million people was stolen in a ransomware attack on one of its subsidiaries, Change Healthcare. This cyberattack caused months of unprecedented disruption and widespread disruption across the U.S. healthcare sector.
