Rory McIlroy participated in the first two rounds of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills alongside Ryder Cup teammates Tommy Fleetwood and Ludvig Åberg.
McIlroy, seeking his second major title of the season, two months after winning back-to-back titles at the Masters and 15 years after his landmark victory at this event, suffered early and late draws in the first two days.
The six-time major champion is scheduled to compete on Thursday morning along with two other members of Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team. Åberg and Fleetwood finished runners-up at the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills, completing a big three-ball at 7:52am local time (12:52pm BST).
Scottie Scheffler is also making his first attempt at a career Grand Slam, as did McIlroy at last year’s Masters, with the pre-tournament world number one winning his fifth major title in as many seasons.
The 29-year-old tees off at 8.15am BST alongside amateur Mason Howell and defending champion JJ Spaun. JJ Spahn could become the first player since Brooks Koepka to win back-to-back US Open titles.
Koepka is trying to make the All-American three-ball with Chris Gotterup and Players champion Cameron Young, while two-time U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau is on the other side of the draw trying to avoid missing a third straight cut at a major.
DeChambeau opens the tournament at 1:25pm BST alongside Viktor Hovland and 2022 champion Matt Fitzpatrick, who has three wins on the PGA Tour this season and was runner-up to Bud Cauley at the RBC Canadian Open last week.
Former US Open champions Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm were all grouped together during the first two rounds, while another notable three-ball early in the latter part of the draw was Xander Schauffele’s partner Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama.
