CCTV footage from a wedding held in Jammu, Indian-administered Kashmir, shows a man shooting former Prime Minister Farooq Abdullah. Abdullah escaped uninjured after the attack on Wednesday evening.
Police told the BBC they had detained a suspect named Kamal Singh Jamwal and were investigating the matter.
Abdullah, who served as prime minister of Indian-administered Kashmir five times, is also the president of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, a prominent regional political party.
His son Omar Abdullah, the current Prime Minister, shared in a social media post:
“Allah is kind. My father had a very good shave. The details are sketchy now, but all we know is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get up to close range and shoot.”
He also questioned how he was able to become so close to his father, who has Z+ security, one of the highest security levels in the country.
