Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has reached a “verbal agreement” to join Bayern Munich and formal talks between the clubs have begun, according to Germany's Sky.
Bayern are looking for Thomas Tuchel's successor after Tuchel's transfer was confirmed last week.
The Bundesliga side have now turned their attention to Kompany and although both sides are in concrete, positive talks, no agreement has yet been reached.
Kompany wants to move to Bayern and a verbal agreement has been reached. However, the deal is not yet complete.
Sky sports news Burnley have been contacted for comment on Bayern's interest in Kompany.
The Belgian, whose contract at Turf Moor runs until the summer of 2028, is wanted by Bayern sporting directors Max Eberl and Christoph Freund.
Bayern have also been gathering information about Mauricio Pochettino, who left Chelsea on Tuesday, but no discussions have taken place with the German giants focused on Kompany.
Their interest in the 38-year-old comes despite him enduring a difficult season at Burnley after the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League in their bid for an immediate return to the Championship.
But the former Manchester City captain, who is also Anderlecht manager, knows a thing or two about the Bundesliga, having played for Hamburg before joining City.
Bayern have so far been frustrated in their efforts to replace Tuchel with Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann and Austria coach Ralf Rangnick.
The Bavarians have also shown interest in Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner, but the Austrian is content at Selhurst Park.
Bayern's transfer of Kompany is 'risky' and 'experimental'
Sky in Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg:
“Our two sporting directors, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, are fully focused on finalizing a possible deal with Kompany.
“Nothing has been agreed or signed yet, but talks and negotiations are ongoing and Bayern would like to finalize the search for a new manager in the coming days.”
“Bayern have been gathering information on Mauricio Pochettino over the past few days, but there has been no direct contact between the club and the former Chelsea manager over the past few hours. Signs suggest Bayern are focusing on Kompany.
“After a difficult few weeks for Bayern and the rejection of Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick, Pochettino will now be a candidate and a figure to sell to the public.
“He led PSG, Eric Dier and Harry Kane were successful at Tottenham and he performed very well in the second half of the season at Chelsea. But Max Eberl is under pressure at Bayern and they want to create a 'new Xabi Alonso'. do.”
“Going to Kompany is risky. It's risky. It's 100% experimental. But Bayern are seeing something in Kompany now. They also have a feeling and confirmation from Kompany that he is ready for a big, big challenge for Bayern.”
“Is this the right move for Kompany now? It’s hard to say. Perhaps he will reject Bayern as well and choose Pochettino. At this stage, we don’t know anything about Bayern.”
