Manchester City have completed the signing of Vivienne Miedema until the summer of 2027.
Clubs across Europe and North America were interested in the striker, but the 27-year-old joined Manchester City on a free transfer after leaving Arsenal at the end of his contract.
Miedema is the WSL's all-time leading scorer. However, she has only played eight league games over the past two seasons due to injury, including a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in December 2022.
Miedema, who joined Arsenal from Bayern Munich in 2017, won the WSL title with the Gunners in 2019 and the League Cup in 2018, 2023 and 2024.
The Netherlands international's decision to leave north London has had a knock-on effect, with Miedema reportedly keen for a new challenge and Arsenal looking to reinvest in their squad.
At the time of signing, Miedema said: “The reason I chose City is because they have the same ambitions as me. They want to win the league and the title.
“Looking to the future, I've always said I want to play with the best players in the world and I think City have that.
“I haven't played as much football as I wanted over the last two years, but I think and hope that my best is yet to come. I hope to help the team as much as I can.
“I'm really happy to be part of the team and I hope the girls can help me get back to my best. Once I get back to my best, I think we can achieve something really good together.
“I feel like this is where I need to be now. Ultimately, it was an easy choice for me.
“I want to challenge myself every day in training and every week in the matches.”
Manager Gareth Taylor said: “We are very excited to welcome Viv to City and see her succeed over the next three years.
“Our goal is to compete on the highest stage and achieve the highest honors, and Viv shares this aspiration.
“She is a top talent who I am delighted to be working with as she is a player I have always admired. Viv will be a real asset to the team.”
Miedema will also be reunited with Dutch teammates Gilles Ruud and Kerstin Kaspari, both of whom are returning from ACL injuries.
She is expected to join Manchester City for pre-season training at the end of July.
Miedema joins powerful Manchester City attack
Sky Sports' Charlotte Marsh:
“After missing out on the WSL title to Chelsea on goal difference last season, Taylor and his team are determined to ensure that doesn't happen again this time around.
“Manchester City have a pretty strong attacking line-up, with Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly on either wing, Bernie Shaw through the middle and Miedema capable of playing as a No. 10 or right alongside Shaw.
“And that's before we even talk about the return of Gilles Ruud, the breakthrough of Jess Park and the steadying influence of Yui Hasegawa in central midfield.
“Miedema's arrival could also be the best business of the transfer market. Firstly, it is a free transfer.
“And despite having her name written into WSL history multiple times during her seven years at Arsenal, the forward is just 27 and is arguably in the prime of her career.
“She too will have something to prove after 18 months of injury disappointment and frustration. It will be a stark warning to other WSL teams.
“Now it's time to see if Miedema can shine elsewhere in the WSL and win some more silverware along the way.”
