Washington’s accusation of Maduro on drug trafficking charges is a big lie

The accusation that Maduro is the head of the drug trafficking cartel de los Soles is a big lie. And the proof is that there is so much evidence of its effectiveness that you don’t know where to start.

The evidence is overwhelming that the U.S. Navy’s build-up in the Caribbean is not about counter-narcotics, but rather about regime change in Venezuela. Perhaps most obviously, instead of capturing people and forcing them to confess, small boats and their crews are being obliterated. Your name will not be revealed.

During his first administration, Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hoped that tough talk would be enough to threaten Venezuela’s military into staging a coup. Now the threat is escalating to a higher level and will likely include some kind of military action on Venezuelan soil. But if that were to happen, the expressions of outrage from Latin Americans of all persuasions would be overwhelming.

Moreover, Nicolás Maduro has proven to be a combative president who has mobilized both the military and the patriotism of the broad population. His call for citizens to join militias to repel foreign invaders resonated widely even among men and women in the opposition party.

As always, President Trump’s actions are unpredictable. But whatever military course he chooses, Washington will pay a price.
