“We see a lot of opportunity in the Caribbean”

Tennessee-based Contour Airlines only began serving the Caribbean region late last summer, but the airline sees more potential in the region.

Contour, which operates smaller regional jets, has launched a regional network with flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, USVI, to the Dominica.

The airline also has a new transit agreement with JetBlue.

In November, the network expanded with a new flight from Puerto Rico to Princess Juliana International Airport on St. Maarten. The route is currently operated three times a week by Contour’s 30-seat jet.

“We see a lot of opportunity in the Caribbean,” Contour CEO Matt Chaifetz said at the CTO Air Connectivity Summit in Bermuda this week. “Where we see opportunity is where other airlines are struggling.”

This includes other routes without services where local governments are “willing to step in and mitigate risks and demonstrate markets,” he said.

“We haven’t built our entire business plan around the Caribbean, but we’re excited to have our capabilities deployed where it makes sense.”
