The operation in the northern West Bank also saw raids on the city of Tubas and the al-Fara refugee camp, the deadliest since Hamas launched an offensive against Israel in October last year, sparking a war in the Gaza Strip.
Hundreds of soldiers from various security forces intervened, trapping civilians in their homes and cutting off public services while Israeli troops fought militants on the ground with airstrikes.
Residents of the Jenin camp, located in the western part of the city, took to the streets for the first time since the IDF began its offensive on August 27.
Many were stunned and exhausted, slowly assessing the damage. This operation was adding a new layer of destruction to the camp.
Khalid Abu Sabir lives in a basement apartment next to the mosque. He said the entire floor of his house was blown away by the powerful blast.
The Israeli military was interested in a cave beneath the building, which was said to have been empty for decades.
The IDF told him to leave before they detonated the bomb, which also blew up his house.
The narrow streets of Jenin bear the marks of years of fierce fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants. Bullet holes dot the walls, piles of rubble left by military bulldozers, graffiti depicting M16 rifles and the name “Hamas” are painted on them.
There was extensive damage in the city centre, with major roads damaged and impassable.
Construction vehicles dig up logs from the broken road and haul them away. Shopkeepers and photographers climb over the rubble to survey the damage.
Crowds on both sides paused to watch the rebuilding process. Residents walked, rode scooters and bikes, taking to the streets for the first time in nine days.
Dr. Wissam Bakr, director of Jenin National Hospital, was also present and said the first four days of the Israeli operation were the most difficult for the hospital, as electricity and water supplies were cut off.
He said two newborns and two elderly patients were on ventilators and they were dependent on generators and water tanks.
Further down the same street, the sounds of the city returned. Street vendors returned to the edge of the market, selling carts laden with fresh fruit and vegetables, and the surrounding cafes were bustling with men and boys of several generations.
On Friday morning, gunfire erupted again in the refugee camp, signalling the start of a large funeral procession. The BBC understands that at least eight of the dead were civilians, including a 16-year-old girl.
“During the operation, 14 terrorists were killed, more than 30 suspects were arrested, and about 30 explosive devices planted under the road were defused,” the IDF said in a statement in the Jenin area.
It also said it had dismantled “numerous terrorist infrastructure facilities,” including an underground weapons storage facility beneath a mosque and a laboratory used to manufacture explosives, and removed “large quantities of weapons.”
The Palestinian Health Ministry said three Palestinians had also died in the southern governorate of Hebron in the past nine days.
The Israeli military said it killed three Israeli police officers in a shooting near Tarqumiya on Sunday.
Violence has surged in the West Bank since Hamas' offensive and the subsequent war in Gaza.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said more than 600 Palestinians have been killed as Israeli forces intensify airstrikes. Israel said it was trying to stop deadly Palestinian attacks on Israelis in the West Bank and inside Israel.
