The next best option for the United States is for the severely damaged Islamic Republic to modify its behavior, stop abusing its own citizens, and stop supporting radical militias in the region. Again, this seems highly unlikely after Iran chose Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of its late hardline predecessor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as its new supreme leader, the man most likely to irritate the United States.
