This was my second visit to the Netherlands. I first visited Amsterdam in 2011 with my boyfriend (now husband). Our return to Western Europe in 2018 gave us a great reason to return to the Lowlands and explore Maastricht. As we found out, Maastricht is the oldest city in the Netherlands, surrounded by gorgeous architecture and covered in bicycles. To be honest, the Netherlands should be explored when the weather is warm. Because both trips were cloudy and gloomy. Still, it was a very enjoyable trip.
Things to visit and do when you visit Maastricht:
– Visit the coolest bookstores bookstore dominican This place sells thousands of different books, magazines and souvenirs. You might ask why it’s the coolest? Well, because in a bookstore, you can browse the entire bookstore and discover a captivating historic church. Pay attention to the ceiling. It’s quite attractive.
– go around Bryhov It’s a square with a flea market, shops, cafes, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a concert. We were there when there was some kind of carnival going on and people were dressed up like crazy.
– Light a candle Our Lady’s Cathedral. When we travel, we usually visit churches and cathedrals because we admire the religious and historical sights, and it always gives us a good rest in a peaceful or mystical atmosphere. Also, don’t forget to visit. Basilica of St. More ReservedThere is a small fee to use the museum.
– Discover the underworld of Maastricht. north cave (cave north) close I’m Peter Port. I didn’t have time to visit Sunt Pieter Fort, but I highly recommend visiting if you have time. As for the North Caves, it was one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had. It was definitely the highlight of our trip. You will learn very informative facts and history of the underworld. This too was very spooky. Be prepared for darkness and avoid getting separated from your tour group. This activity is a 100% must-do in Maastricht.
– Go shopping. I always visit vintage stores. I love comparing prices and, of course, finding something unique that the mass market can’t offer. I recommend checking it out. magnolia used goods store, We Are Vintage & Design.
– Eat as much as possible. Traveling without trying the local food is like having never been there. If you’re not a fan of gluten or heavy meats, there are plenty of healthy options too. Some cafes you can check out are: EetCafe Ceramique, Livin Room Maastricht, Vers.
