Heather Knight says “not at the moment” about her future as England captain with two matches remaining in the Women’s Ashes.
England lost the series on a one-day international tour after losing 3-0 to Australia and falling 10-0 down. They subsequently lost their first two T20 internationals.
Knight hit 43 from 19 balls in Canberra on Thursday and England’s 186 as Australia won by six runs at Duckworth-Lewis-Stern was undone by rain as the match ended in the final over.
England have not won the Women’s Ashes since 2014, winning four games and drawing the series in Australia.
Their aim in the ongoing competition is to avoid a whitewash, with one more T20 international in Adelaide on Saturday and a day-night Test match in Melbourne on January 30.
“I think no matter what leadership position you are in, you always feel responsible when the team isn’t performing well,” said Knight, who has been captain since 2016.
“Overall, we haven’t performed as well as we would have liked. It’s definitely frustrating, but (my future) doesn’t really matter at the moment.
“I’m focused on what I need to do to win the next game and turn things around. Whatever happens after the tour, that will be a conversation for another time.”
Knight: The referee’s right to stop the game in case of rain.
Knight looked angry as the referee led the players off the pitch at Manuka Oval. She hit Annabel Sutherland for four to hundred to reduce England’s requirements to 18 runs off the last five balls.
But she later admitted officials had made the right decision.
“It was 100 per cent the right decision by the umpire,” added Knight, who had previously top-scored Danni Wyatt-Hodge with 52 off 40 deliveries.
“I did my best to beat us in that game and I was obviously frustrated that we were out of the game, but I wasn’t in the referee’s box at all. “It was pretty wet. It felt pretty slippery even as we were running.
“I felt like we could get over the line, I felt like we had a really good boundary option on a really good cricket wicket.
“It was a great crowd and they deserved to get across the finish line. You could hear the fans’ frustration that we had to leave.”
‘We are all interested in playing for England’
England have focused on playing entertaining, attacking cricket since Jon Lewis took over as coach in 2022, but have failed to win an Ashes series or T20 World Cup in that time.
Knight added: “This is still a really important order for this team. We always give our best when we start the game and try to enjoy it. But obviously there is more to cricket than that.
“We know it’s not as simple as just saying we want to have fun. We also want to win at the end of the day.
“We didn’t do that on this trip and there are a lot of players who are frustrated and hurt that we didn’t do that.
“We are all really interested in playing for England and representing a really special team.”
