Women’s Cricket World Cup: Rain mars Sri Lanka’s match against New Zealand in Colombo after Nilakshika de Silva’s record-breaking 26-ball 50 cricket news

Sri Lanka’s hopes of winning their first Women’s Cricket World Cup were thwarted by rain and New Zealand could not begin their chase in the match in Colombo.

Three downpours put an end to Sri Lanka’s Nilakshika de Silva (55no off 28 balls) as the team took a point each in a rout that broke this World Cup’s half-century with a total of 258-6 off 26 balls.

Sri Lanka sit in seventh place with two points after two losses and two rains in four games, while New Zealand sit in fifth place, three points behind India, with two losses and one win ahead of Tuesday’s wet match.

Apart from De Silva’s brilliant 50, Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Attapatu (53) and Bishmi Gunaratne (42) hit 101 in the opener, while Hasini Perera hit 44 in his first batting of the tournament.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine claimed three wickets but would have been annoyed by a series of dropped catches, some sloppy ground fielding and a fluffy snag from wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze.

The White Ferns face bottom-placed Pakistan on Saturday ahead of the end of the league phase against India and England, while Sri Lanka face South Africa ahead of clashes with Bangladesh and Pakistan on Friday.
