X, Bracing for Brazil ban as judge's deadline passes

Judge Moraes gave X 24 hours to appoint new legal representation or face a stay of proceedings, with the deadline set for just after 8 p.m. local time (11 p.m. GMT) on Thursday.

It is expected that it will take about 12 hours for the ban to take effect.

but A post from one of the official accounts shortly after the deadline passed., externalX made it clear that he did not comply with the order.

The post reads: “Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Morais to order the closure of X in Brazil because we will not comply with his illegal order to censor his political opponents.”

“The fundamental problem here is that Judge de Moraes is asking us to break Brazilian law. We simply will not do that.”

X said it would not comply with the “illegal secret order,” adding that it would make the judge's demands public in the coming days “in the interest of transparency.”

Judge Moraes ordered that the X account (a large supporter of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro) accused of spreading false information be blocked while the investigation continues. He said that if the account is reactivated, the company’s legal representatives will be held accountable.

Meanwhile, the bank accounts of Mr Musk's satellite internet company Starlink have been frozen in Brazil, following an order from Brazil's Supreme Court.

The order, signed by Judge Moraes, was in response to X no longer having legal representation in the country.

Starlink responded with a post to X saying, “This order is based on an unfounded finding that Starlink is liable for unconstitutionally imposed fines against X.”

Musk also said at X that “SpaceX and X are two completely different companies with different shareholders.”

Judge Moraes rose to fame after his decisions restricting social media platforms in the country.

He is also investigating President Bolsonaro and his supporters for their involvement in an alleged coup attempt on January 8 last year.
