X (formerly Twitter) has announced the launch of Passkey support on Android. The launch follows the social network's rollout of Passkey support to all iOS users in April.
Passkey login makes it harder for malicious actors to access your account remotely, because they would need physical access to your phone. Unlike standard login, Passkey uses Face ID or Touch ID, a PIN, or a physical security authentication key to verify your login.
Passkeys are a relatively new technology that eliminates the need to rely on username and password combinations, which can be vulnerable to phishing and other problems.
X is one of many tech companies that have adopted passkey support over the past year or so. Other notable adopters include Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, PayPal, TikTok, WhatsApp, and GitHub.
Adding passkey support to X could help users who previously relied on SMS 2FA, which X removed for free users last year.
You can enable Passkey on X by logging into the app, clicking on “Account” in the navigation bar, then selecting “Settings & Privacy.” You’ll then need to click on “Security & Account Access,” then “Security.” Under the “Additional Password Protection” option, select “Passkey.” Click on the “Add Passkey” option, then follow the prompts to enable the feature.
