When it comes to AI chatbots, there is currently a war going on for consumer attention. All the big chatbot providers are trying to grow their user base, and with a small coup of its own, Google has made it much easier for other chatbot users to move to Gemini.

On Thursday, the company announced the “Conversion Tool,” a new widget designed to allow users to transfer their “memories” (basically chunks of personal information) and entire chat history directly to Gemini from other chatbots. This way, users can easily share “key preferences, relationships, and personal context,” the company says.

The idea is to make Google’s AI assistant much easier to adopt because users won’t have to spend a lot of time retraining Gemini on who they are and what they want.

The memory function works as follows: Gemini suggests a prompt letting the user enter the current chatbot and then generates a response that can be copied and pasted back into Gemini. In this way, Gemini coaches you on what kind of information it would be helpful to know about you, while also helping you easily transfer that information to your own archives.

“When you import these memories, Gemini will understand the same key facts you share with other apps, including your interests, the names of your siblings, and where you grew up,” the company says. “Instead of starting from scratch, Gemini can quickly get up to speed on what matters most to them.”

When it comes to importing your chat history, Google says you just need to upload it as a zip file. It is relatively easy to export chat logs via zip from most chatbots, including ChatGPT and Claude. This allows users to “seamlessly resume where they left off,” the company says. Google says users can also search for old chats.

ChatGPT remains a big kahuna in the consumer chatbot market, with OpenAI announcing last month that it had reached 900 million weekly active users. Gemini lags in consumer awareness despite Google’s broad deployment advantages, including native deployment across Android devices and the Chrome browser. Last month, during Alphabet’s fourth-quarter earnings call, it shared its own numbers, saying Gemini had surpassed 750 million monthly active users. The move is clearly aimed at helping Google catch up.
