Giant sea lion ‘Choncus’ makes unusual visit to San Francisco

A nearly 2,000-pound Steller sea lion nicknamed ‘Chonkers’ hangs out at San Francisco’s Pier 39 and draws fans from all over the country. The giant mammal made waves about a month ago when it dragged itself onto the dock and decided to stay. While California sea lions typically flock to the area, ‘Chonkers’ quickly stood out due to their massive size. He is one of at least two Steller sea lions recently discovered in the bay. This animal is more commonly found in the cold waters of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, so sightings are less common in the Bay Area.
