Charlie Kirk’s family attends murder suspect’s hearing

The family of Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, issued a statement to local media ahead of Monday’s proceedings, which are expected to last until Friday.

“Charlie was a beloved husband, son, brother, friend and father,” said Kirk’s widow, Erika, his parents Robert and Kathryn and his sister Mary. “Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irreparably affected our lives and the lives of his children.”

Kirk’s parents and widow arrived in court separately on Monday.

“We are deeply grateful for the support, prayers and kindness we have received,” the family said in a statement. “This outpouring has sustained us through the darkest days of our lives.

“Out of respect for the judicial process, we will not be commenting further at this time. We ask for continued privacy as we navigate this process and our tremendous grief.”

Previously, defense attorneys attempted to exclude various pieces of evidence from previous trials and attempted, but failed, to ban cameras from the courtroom during the preliminary hearing that began Monday. They also asked Judge Tony Graf to abolish the death penalty.

Robinson, dressed in a brightly colored suit, sat among lawyers at the defense table.

Prosecutors said they expected four law enforcement witnesses to appear that day.
