Leonardo Proteus development contract extended

Leonardo confirmed at the Farnborough International Airshow that funding for its Proteus unmanned helicopter demonstrator has been renewed to last until mid-2027.

Speaking to the media during the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 briefing, Leonardo Helicopters UK managing director Nigel Colman confirmed the Proteus helicopter program was continuing following questions about a possible funding shortfall.

The Proteus aircraft, serial number LH001, was flown only once. This first flight took place in January 2026 from Predannak Airfield, Cornwall, home of the National Drone Hub.

It was then returned by road to Yeovil where it was put on physical display at the Farnborough International Air Show 2026 (20-24 July).

In response to questions from the media, Colman said he only flew it once because “you only have to fly it once.” Much of the development needed can be completed in a virtual environment, and the company’s view is that available funds are “best spent” on this work and mission system development rather than conducting more flight testing than is absolutely necessary.

To make this possible, Leonardo will use the ‘digital twin’ of Proteus to perform advanced testing without a physical test flight.

As a demonstrator, Proteus will have a direct impact on the development of the operating model, although it does not plan to enter operational service directly. It will be sold in the UK and overseas, particularly to operators of other Leonardo marine helicopter products such as the Merlin and Wildcat.

The helicopter, which features a sizable modular payload area in the fuselage, has previously been presented as a mission module and payload concept that could represent what future operational airframes based on the design will look like.

Leonardo sees the future of rotary wing maritime aviation as the natural realm of crewed and unmanned teaming (CUC/T, also known as manned-unmanned teaming, or MUM/T). Autonomous systems can take on “boring, dirty and dangerous tasks,” reducing overall costs and minimizing risk to employees.

Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) is one of the most complex tasks that can be performed even by crewed aircraft, so it may take some time to get unmanned aerial vehicles to a level where they can work alongside highly trained ASW forces. But at the most basic level, autonomous vehicles can be instructed to deploy patterns of sonobuoys or dipping sonar at various programmed locations. All data generated can be streamed back to a helicopter, ship, or shore station for processing.

Regarding Leonardo’s response to the Defense Investment Plan (DIP), the company is still in the process of digesting what this means for the company and UK defense as a whole. We are working with the Department of Defense to understand what Leonardo will need over the next few years.

Colman said Yeovil would remain the UK’s center of excellence for autonomous systems as well as the home of UK Helicopters. “When people think of Yeovil, they think of helicopters,” he said. “Yeovil’s future is not defined by one aircraft type.”
