The symbol of the Lebanese flag is the cedar tree. The problem is that there are not many cedar trees in Lebanon anymore.
In ancient times, wood was used as a building material and fuel source, so there were not many substitutes.
As civilizations and empires grew, the ever-increasing demand for timber and farmland led to the systematic destruction of ancient forests.

Humans have been deforestation since before the rise of civilization. Archaeologists and historians believe that Paleolithic people actively engaged in deforestation through controlled fires to reduce the density of unwanted trees and make hunting and gathering easier. Early stone tools provide evidence of hatchets used to fell small trees.
Neolithic people began deforestation as soon as they settled fertile river valleys to provide irrigation and create permanent communities along the riverbanks.
These people practiced slash-and-burn farming, intentionally burning trees to improve the soil. The benefits of this process were quickly apparent in higher yields, but the impact was short-lived. The resulting increase in fertility was lost in the cycle of erosion caused by tree scarcity.
As the soil was depleted, the community moved to the next forest, repeating the cycle. As long as the tribe was small, this wasn’t a big problem.
However, as human societies transformed into civilizations, this pattern continued, now reinforced by new demands for wood and the construction of walls.
In Mesopotamia, the arid landscape of the southern Tigris and Euphrates river basins led to a complete lack of native timber in the early city-states. To build massive temples and fleets, these societies began large-scale logging campaigns in the forested highlands of the north.
As local supplies dwindled, Mesopotamian rulers were forced to look further afield, launching long-distance logging expeditions outside their borders. A commonly cited estimate is that approximately 99.6% of Lebanon’s original cedar forests have been lost.
As a result of this continued deforestation, soil erosion has blocked river valleys, destabilizing entire water systems. This led to a severe salinization crisis, causing toxic salt deposits to rise from deep underground to the surface crust. The white, salt-covered soil eventually crippled Mesopotamian agriculture, turning the cradle of civilization into a barren desert.
Farther east, the great cities of the Indus Valley, Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, made many of the same mistakes as the cities of Mesopotamia.
To build sprawling urban centers, they stripped down surrounding forests and consumed vast quantities of wood to produce millions of waterproof fired bricks and fuel the massive kilns that fueled a thriving bronze industry.
This deforestation destabilized the Indus River basin, triggering severe soil erosion and causing devastating floods that ultimately pushed their civilization to the brink.
In a region regularly battered by seasonal monsoons and torrents of Himalayan snowmelt, these trees and their deep root systems along the riverbanks served as important natural sponges, absorbing the shock of annual floods. During their absence, the floods became increasingly violent and unpredictable.
This escalating chaos led to despair and devotion to early Hindu gods such as Indra, the god of storms and thunder. Indra desperately pleaded with the people to tame the raging waters.
The Greco-Roman world also faced severe deforestation.
Unlike Egypt or Mesopotamia, Greece did not need large rivers to irrigate its fields. It was a dispersed maritime power.
To build a massive fleet of triremes that would power the entire Mediterranean, they cleared trees from the hills surrounding hundreds of Greek city-states.
In the ancient Greek world, these city-states were fiercely competitive. If Athens built a large navy, Corinth and Thebes quickly followed suit.
The Greek forests suffered the most from this arms race. Finding suitable wood to make triremes and the hundreds of strong, long oars that drove them was difficult.
The Aegean world has never possessed the vast and resilient forests found in the Americas. Mediterranean forests are relatively thin, so once they disappear, they do not easily return. This severe wood shortage permanently damaged the local ecosystem, eventually leading the Greeks to embark on a colonization mission across the Mediterranean in search of more trees.
We know that the effects of deforestation are well known in Greece because Greek philosophers wrote about it. Plato noted: As in the case of small islands, all the fertile and soft parts of the soil have been removed, leaving behind only the bones of the ruins that can be said to be the skeleton of the land.
As Rome expanded, so did its thirst for wood. Like the Greeks, the Romans relied heavily on shipbuilding to project imperial power throughout the Mediterranean. our seaOr ‘our sea’.
However, the Roman Empire had a huge need for wood beyond building warships. The Romans required unprecedented amounts of continuous fuel to fuel the large public baths scattered throughout their empire.
This massive complex was an energy black hole powered by a huge wood-burning furnace that operated continuously just below the bathhouse floor.
In addition to the typical impacts of deforestation, Roman deforestation triggered a cycle of death from mosquito-borne diseases as coastal erosion led to the expansion of wetlands. By removing trees from the hills of Italy, the Romans destroyed the earth’s natural ability to absorb water, as they did in many other places.
Severe soil erosion has blocked local river deltas, such as the Tiber River, and transformed previously fertile valleys into stagnant, sunny swamps, such as the Pontine Marshes along the coast southeast of the city of Rome.
This man-made landscape has become a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. When the highly lethal malaria parasite arrived from Africa, these man-made swamps turned a local scourge into a centuries-long nightmare.
The resulting epidemic left vast swaths of the Italian countryside completely uninhabitable, severely damaged Roman agriculture, changed the composition of the workforce and permanently scarred the empire.
During Nero’s reign, an agronomist named Columella warned of the danger. he said, And there should be no wetlands near the building. The former emit a terrible odor in hot weather and breed insects armed with annoying stingers that attack us in dense swarms… This often leads to hidden diseases, the causes of which are not even understood by doctors.
Despite their wisdom, science, and innovation, the Greeks and Romans still suffered the ravages of deforestation.
Perhaps the civilization most affected by deforestation was the Mayan civilization.
The Maya, a group of city-states in Mexico and Central America, unintentionally caused serious damage to their civilization through deforestation.
Maya deforestation was driven by an unexpected culprit: their monumental architecture. All of the competing city-states of the Mayan world built massive pyramids and vast plazas. To preserve the wonder of these sacred rituals, the Mayans wrapped them in a thick protective layer of stucco.
However, producing this material came at a huge ecological cost. To make limestone gypsum, the Mayans had to burn quicklimestone at temperatures exceeding 800 degrees Celsius (1,500 degrees Fahrenheit).
Generating that intense and sustained heat required enormous amounts of wood.
When the Mayan civilization first began, their environment was dense, undisturbed tropical rainforest. The village was completely shaded by a huge tree canopy, and farmland was carefully carved out of the edge of the jungle.
But as the construction arms race intensified, trees began to disappear.
Historian and biologist Jared Diamond described the effects of Mayan deforestation in his book Collapse. He wrote: According to calculations, it is estimated that most of the fallen pine trees were burned as fuel and the rest were used as building materials or plaster. At other Maya sites of the Preclassic period, when the Maya used thick gypsum lavishly in their buildings, gypsum production may have been a major cause of deforestation. In addition to depositing sediment in the valley and depriving the valley residents of their wood supply, deforestation may have begun to create an “artificial drought” in the valley floor. That’s because forests play an important role in the water cycle, and large-scale deforestation tends to lead to lower rainfall.
The ecological damage caused by gypsum-induced deforestation has had serious consequences for the entire region. The Mayans engaged in such extensive clearing that Diamond and other scientists claim it actively transformed entire ecosystems.
Trees play an important and stable role in regulating the water cycle, and when their defensive cover is compromised, the environmental feedback loop turns disastrous.
Stripping forests isn’t just about suppressing rainfall. The bare landscape absorbed enormous amounts of surface heat, quickly baking and drying tropical soils. This dried soil became completely vulnerable to severe erosion.
Although not entirely intentional, the Maya’s desperate need to fuel their ceremonial architecture triggered a catastrophic ecological collapse.
This man-made crisis fundamentally collapsed the southern lowlands, precipitated the end of the Classic Maya period and permanently shifted the center of Maya urban civilization hundreds of miles north to the arid plains of the Yucatan Peninsula, giving rise to legendary new cities such as Chichen Itza.
The Mayan kings who practiced the principles of divine sovereignty lost their divine sovereignty due to the collapse of agriculture and society. The social contract broke down as year after year failed to bring rain and the rulers proved utterly powerless to produce the necessary agricultural surpluses needed to feed their subjects.
A desperate and starving population attacked the elite, sparking violent revolts and civil unrest that led to the collapse of the Mayan world in the 10th century.
Perhaps the most famous example of human-induced deforestation and its dramatic impacts is the tragedy that unfolded on Easter Island. When Polynesians first settled on the island in the 13th century, it was heavily wooded.
Once settled, they began a rapid deforestation campaign, removing giant palm trees from the land. This was an ecological disaster because it caused widespread soil erosion, which was further exacerbated by the strength of the sea winds.
To make matters worse, the Polynesians introduced rats to eat palm seeds, thereby disrupting natural reforestation.
Wood was in many ways the ancient equivalent of oil to the modern world. It supplied energy, tools, ships, buildings and agricultural land. Ancient economies were heavily dependent on wood, as it fulfilled many roles that were later filled by coal, oil, steel, concrete, and plastics. States could postpone regional limitations by importing timber or conquering new territories, but they could not escape such dependence.
Deforestation was not the sole cause of the collapse of most ancient civilizations, but it was certainly a major cause of many. The thirst for a single commodity that can be used for almost everything has had unexpected and destructive consequences.
