Tottenham’s season is in jeopardy as pressure mounts on Anjou Postekoglou.
Spurs lost 3-2 to Everton, leaving them 15th in the Premier League standings. This places them closer to the relegation zone than any European team.
The half-time 3-0 loss to a side that had seen Postekoglou’s side score 15 goals in 20 games beforehand was Tottenham’s 12th defeat of the season and continued their dismal run of one win against basement club Southampton. – Among the last 10 games.
Spurs’ 12 defeats this season are their most since 22 league games in more than 25 years. On the other hand, they have won just nine times in the Premier League in the last nine months and have lost 24 of their last 50 matches.
So what’s next for Postecoglou and Tottenham ahead of a busy end of January both on and off the pitch? Sky Sports News’ Michael Bridge explains it all…
Is Postecoglou under serious pressure?
My understanding is that he is not under any serious pressure. I think there is some pressure about being 15th in the league. To them it is unacceptable.
But Postecoglou himself said so. He also said that although they were still participating in three cup competitions, their league position was unacceptable. He’s right.
So there is pressure. However, in terms of his job security, I believe he still has the full support of the board.
However, Tottenham’s season will be decided in the next three to four weeks. With the likes of Mickey van der Ven and Christian Romero back in the coming weeks, they could qualify for the last 16 of the Europa League, reach the Carabao Cup final or even beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup.
Then you’re turning around and actually saying this could still be a good season.
But they lost to Hoffenheim in Europe on Thursday, leaving them out of the top eight and with two more games left to progress to the latter stages of the Europa League. They could lose to Anfield in the second round of the Carabao Cup or they could go to Villa.
If that happens, it’s going to be a tough few months until May.
Why is the board giving him the time?
I think it’s acknowledged that these injuries are seriously derailing the team. It’s not just a strange injury, it’s a serious injury.
People may criticize him for his style of play which led to the hamstring injury. You can’t blame Postecoglou for Dominic Solanke kicking the ball in training and his knees moving.
Postecoglou has been telling me and my colleagues for the past two or three weeks that Dom needs help. And now Dom is injured.
It’s January 20th, but no outfielders have been recruited. Yes, January is difficult. But he really needs help now.
Can Postekoglou get that support in the January transfer window?
I believe so. We have to bring players. January is not easy, but it is achievable. Tottenham had a good January transfer window.
For example, Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur were January signings and they are now two of Tottenham’s best players. So that could happen.
However, European clubs are not very keen on releasing players in January. European soccer is now taking place in January. This has never happened before.
But despite that, I still believe Spurs will sign at least one player, but it has to happen soon.
Where do Spurs fans sit at Postecoglou?
Mixed is probably a fair assessment at the moment after the loss to Everton.
When he joined I had never seen such love. As Postecoglou himself said, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was like being in a nightclub. Even Robbie Williams started singing about him.
And they performed poorly against Chelsea on Monday Night Football, losing 4-1. The season was derailed after that and Postecoglou never really got it back.
Many fans believe it wasn’t his fault and that he wasn’t supported. They feel the team is not good enough, he needs money, he needs to sign better players.
Some fans were upset that there was only one way he played. Some people think injuries are to blame for him, and they don’t like the high line and open midfield.
Some people feel he is stubborn and some feel he needs a change. But who will you bring? We’ve seen Ruben Amorim unsure about joining the club mid-season as he has so much work to do.
Daniel Levy sacked Spurs manager mid-season, how does it look?
I don’t know if fans will accept a makeshift performance like Ryan Mason’s last two appearances. From the mutterings I hear, I don’t think they’ll take it.
Postecoglou still maintains a good relationship with the Spurs hierarchy. The head of football operations is Australian and Ange supporter Scott Munn.
Postecoglou works very well with Tottenham technical director Johan Lange. However, the next three to four weeks are the key to Tottenham’s season.
If Postecoglou is fired soon, where will that leave Daniel Levy with Spurs fans?
I personally don’t think Daniel Levy would want to rush into firing another manager.
But if they do, the atmosphere at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be very tense in the final months of the season.
Spurs are riddled with injuries at the moment, is there an explanation as to why?
There is no doubt that such a risk exists given Tottenham’s style of play.
I also think poor recruitment has caught up with the club. I look at the squad and I don’t think it’s a top six squad at the moment.
In fairness, I think Postecoglou probably didn’t give himself enough credit when he finished fifth in his first season without Harry Kane.
Tottenham, who had been performing poorly for several seasons, won 1-0 thanks to Kane’s thunderous performance. They used to depend too much on him. Even though we didn’t have him last season, he still had a pretty good season.
We’ve seen numerous injuries and poor performances this season, and players like Son Heung-min, who had a difficult season, are a year older.
And one of the most disappointing facts is, I think, this may be a collective responsibility. They didn’t actually plan any further European matches.
Tottenham were not in Europe last season. We were eliminated from the FA Cup. They were eliminated in the second round of the Carabao Cup. So they essentially only had about 42 games.
This year has already been the 34th game. There are two more European matches this month. They played the second leg of the Carabao Cup. They have the FA Cup.
