As Amazon ends support, users turn to jailbreak their old Kindle.

Many people are jailbreaking their Kindle after hearing that Amazon is ending technical support for older models.

On May 20th, Amazon will end support for the following Kindle devices:

  • Kindle 1st generation
  • Kindle 2nd generation
  • Kindle DX
  • Kindle DX Graphite
  • kindle keyboard
  • kindle 4
  • kindle 5
  • kindle touch
  • Kindle Paperwhite 1st generation
  • Kindle Fire 1st generation
  • Kindle Fire 2nd generation
  • Kindle Fire HD 7
  • Kindle Fire HD 8.9

This move means users will only be able to read content they’ve already downloaded using their devices. So of course people are breaking them out.

Jailbreaking means bypassing the software restrictions that Amazon has placed on Kindle devices. This process allows users to install custom fonts, new screensavers, alternative reading apps, and even third-party tools that extend the Kindle’s capabilities.

However, it’s important to note that jailbreaking your Kindle may violate Amazon’s Terms of Service. In many jurisdictions, jailbreaking is not considered a criminal offense for personal use, but it may be a crime if it involves copyright infringement, distribution of illegal software, or selling modified devices.

How do people jailbreak older Kindles?

Many Kindle owners who choose to jailbreak see it as a way to gain control over the device they purchased rather than being forced to buy a new device, and it still works.

However, jailbreaking is technical and carries risks, including the possibility that your device may become unusable if something goes wrong. This is not possible for all Kindle models or firmware versions, so Kindle owners should first spend some time researching whether their device is compatible before proceeding.

After the owner confirms compatibility, there are several other steps:

  • To prevent Amazon from updating your Kindle and closing the jailbreak loophole, disable Wi-Fi or use airplane mode.
  • Download a jailbreak package from a trusted online forum. Download files only from reputable sources to avoid the risk of introducing malicious files from unknown sources. (MobileRead Forum is widely regarded as a reliable option.)
  • Download the Kindle jailbreak zip file that contains hotfixes to maintain your jailbreak.
  • Connect your Kindle to your computer using a USB cable. Then copy the .bin file directly into your Kindle’s default folder. Then type “;log mrpi” in the Kindle search bar or go to Settings and select “Kindle Updates” to start the installation process.
  • To manage apps and customizations on your jailbroken Kindle, install Kindle Unified Application Launcher (KUAL).
  • Users can also install KOReader, a popular open source e-book reader for jailbroken Kindle. It offers features such as support for multiple file formats (including EPUB), improved PDF handling, and a built-in file browser.

Disadvantages to consider

Jailbreaking has its pros and cons. Running unofficial software can cause unexpected problems, such as frequent app crashes or, in worst cases, your device may stop working completely. Additionally, jailbreaking and using third-party apps may negatively affect battery life.

If you want a safer alternative, you can sideload books to your Kindle at any time using a USB cable and a computer without modifying the system software.

There are plenty of other similar devices out there, including the Boox Palma, the Vivlio e-reader, and this little Xteink X3 that attaches to the back of your phone.
